More than 100 Senators and TDs support Garland

Sean Garland has received the support of over 100 members of the Oireachteas  (National Parliament)  in his fight to end a US attempt to extradite him over claims that he was part of a dollar forgery plot.

Among those who have joined the campaign to end the pursuit of the 76 year old  socialist are Richard Boyd Barrett, Phil Hogan, Finian  McGrath, Joanna Tuffy, Timmy Doleey, Martin Ferris, John Halligan and  Joe Higgins.

Trade Union leaders Jack O’Connor (SIPTU), Jimmy Kelly (UNITE) and Eamon Devoy  (TEEU) are also backing the campaign.

All Party opposition to Garland extradition

TDs, Senators and councillors from all parties and none have publicly expressed their opposition to the proposed extradition of Seán Garland to the United States.

At a press conference in Dublin’s Shellbourne Hotel  chaired by Unitarian Church minister, Rev Chris Hudson MBE,of the ‘Stop the Extradition of Sean Garland ‘ campaign,elected representatives from the Dail, the Senate and a number of councils throughout the country joined to express their opposition to the US request and publicly declare their support for the extradition to be stopped.

Amongst those attending the press conference were  Fianna Fáil Senators Labhrás  ÓMurchú  and Jim Walsh, Labour TD Joanna Tuffy  , Fianna Fáil’s Timmy Dooley,  Sinn  Féin TDs  Martin Ferris and Aengus ÓSnodaigh and Michael Coolrealy, Richard Boyd Barrett of the United Left Alliance, Joe Higgins and Clare Daly of the Socialist Party and Independents Finian  McGrath, John Halligan, Mick Wallace and Luke Flannagan.

Over 70 TDs have so far signed the petition to stop Sean’s extradition.

Campaign comes to Fleadh

Campaign supporters at the Fleadh Ceoil

Supporters of the  Sean Garland Anti Extradition Campaign collected signatures and distributed campaign leaflets at the Fleadh  Cheoil in Cavan last weekend.

They  also manned an information stall in the town from 12 noon to 6pm on Saturday and again on Sunday from 12 noon till 4pm.

Copies of a special Anti Extradition edition of Look Left magazine were on sale throughout the Fleadh.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out over the weekend.

Court adjourns until October

Decision expected in early October

The court hearing of the extradition demand against Sean Garland has been adjourned until the beginning of October.

Submissions by the State and Sean’s defence team have concluded after almost eight days.

The court will sit again at the beginning of October when the judge will inform both sides of the date on which he will deliver his judgement.

Hearing to conclude on Wednesday

The hearing seeking Sean Garland’s extradition to the United States is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday 27th July.

One final session has been scheduled by the court and it is expected that judgement will be reserved until after the summer recess.

Extradition hearing begins as leading unions lend support

The hearing of the US extradition request against Sean Garland beganon Monday 18and has now concluded its fifth day.

The State began by outlining its case for the execution of the extradition warrant even though the United States has yet to disclose any of the evidence it claims to have in support of its allegations.

Sean’s defence team has since been presenting of a number of legal arguments against the extradition in response to the State’s opening statements.

‘Stop the Extradition’ Meeting at ICTU Conference

An information and discussion meeting hosted by the ‘Stop the Extradition of Sean Garland’ campaign was held as part of the ICTU Biennial Conference in Killarney this week.

Speakers from the campaign and leading trade unionists addressed delegates to the conference at a fringe meeting on Tuesday evening.

Amongst those on the platform were Jimmy Kelly, UNITE Regional Secretary, SIPTU General President, Jack O’Connor and Eamon Devoy,TEEU General Secretary.
